A Guide to the Berlin Film Festival 2021
The Berlin Film Festival 2021 which is usually known as the Berlinale, is a film festival which is held annually in Berlin, Germany. It was founded in West Berlin in 1951, the festival has been held every February since 1978 and is one of the “Big three” alongside the Venice Film Festival in Italy and the Cannes Film Festival in France as well. From the year 2019, Mariette Rissenbeek assists as the executive director of the festival, while Carlo Chatrian is the artistic director.

The Berlin Film Festival on Thursday unveiled the titles that will compete in the 2021 Berlinale as well as the high-profile features screening out of competition in Berlin’s Berlinale Specials section.
Berlin broadcasted its competition lineup via a live-streamed press conference on Thursday with festival executive director Mariette Rissenbeek and artistic director Carlo Chatrian. Both presented, socially-distanced, from an empty cinema in Berlin.

This is the 71st Berlin Festival and it will be an exclusive event. Due to the pandemic that is going on all over the world, this festival will split into two stages. From 1st March to 5th March the festival will be held as an online-only event mainly for the international industry. The European Film Market will also go virtual, following a model established last year by the likes of Cannes and the American Film market in Santa Monica.

An in-person festival in the German capital, with red-carpet screenings and gala events, is planned from 9th June to 20th June.
Other than this Rotterdam, one of the most important events for the international independent scene, has taken the Berlin route and split the festival in two, holding a virtual fest for the industry in February and an in person event set for early summer.
